Persuasive Games: Exploitationware

Some articles that I enjoyed in the past few weeks. First one is a breakdown of the recent hot topic gamification by Ian Bogost, game researcher and opponent of the concept. As he mentions in the opening paragraph, he finally decided to write something properly after he “had been trying to ignore gamification, hoping it would go away, like an ill-placed pimple or an annoying party guest or a Katy Perry earworm.”

Poking at Cow Clicker

Another feature involving Ian Bogost, or more specifically Cow Clicker, his satirical/critical game about the nature of social gaming. The irony here is that the game’s attracting alot of players who aren’t aware of his intentions and are playing it for reals. Success?

CityVille Explained

Speaking of how social games work, here’s a pretty in-depth four part walk through the mechanics of a successful social game by examining Zynga’s CityVille.

A Planet Without Square-Enix

A discussion of modest length about the future of Square-Enix games after its polarizing Final Fantasy XIII, written by the guy at actionbutton.net, a games review site I remember mainly for its novel-length reviews. Notice that it is only a “semi-serious analysis”.

Researcher reveals how “Computer Geeks“
replaced “Computer Girls”

This was quite surprising, I always thought the socially-awkward male image has gone hand in hand with computers since forever. It’s crazy how a stereotype can become so deeply ingrained in such a short time.

llama font — say it in llama

Oh, and llamas.

I tried out digital sculpting today using Sculptris, which is currently developed by the ZBrush guys and apparently designed to be very accessible. So despite my tendency to avoid anything 3D, it turned out to be pretty fun actually.

Here’s an animated gif of the head I made, and for those interested in messing around with sculpting you can get a free copy of Sculptris at the moment (it’s in alpha) over at pixologic.com

Images from the Hubble Space Telescope. Very very inspiring.

More (like loads more) images can be found on the telescope’s official website at hubblesite.org

I love the desciption for their wallpaper section — “Fill your computer screen with a Hubble image. Your body may be trapped at your desk, but your imagination can roam the far reaches of the universe with our cosmic visuals.”

StarCraft II: A Look Back

An in-depth look at how SC2 evolved in the three years between its initial announcement and final release. Although written by a fan with no direct involvement in its development, the speculations about many of its changes were well considered and clearly from a person who understands the game. I couldn’t find any more information about the writer but wouldn’t be surprised if he was also in the game industry. Anyway, interesting read, check it out, etc.

ザマギ — It’s So Good Now

Here’s an animation I worked on last year with the lovely Chloe Tak. It’s a two week exercise made with paper cutouts and captured frame by frame using a camcorder fixed over a lightbox.

At first we tried to come up with a coherent story, but decided shortly after that it’d be fun instead to just do a bunch of exercises, considering this was our first time animating stuff. We aimed to have roughly 20 scenes fired off in rapid succession and ended up basing the rythm on Fifty Four Fifty by The Bran Flakes. I thought the song would be perfect for this, since it’s short, upbeat and has an awesome voice over at the beginning and end.

The title wasn’t intended to have any meaning, since the work itself had none. However, one of the contenders was King Krispy and the Corn Cobbers. Can’t remember what that was about, but I still like the sound of it.

Also, after the animation was finished we had ourselves a sizeable collection of paper cutouts, which we felt would’ve been a waste if they were just thrown away. So I made a poster to accompany the animation. Hope you like them!

Oh and again we do not own the song. If you liked the music, please do go check out The Bran Flakes at

I found a compartment I wasn’t aware of in the fridge that I’ve owned for six years. Such a pro.

We are not amused.

Hey look we’re back! This is probably the most thorough design I’ve done for this site, so it did take a while, but I think it was worth it, and I expect this to last quite some time!
